Give The Gift Of Literacy — The Gift That Lasts A Lifetime
photo_3So many of us take reading for granted.

Imagine the despair a young child feels when watching other children in school read out loud and knowing he may be called on next. Or the frustration and anger of being left behind in school and life because the letters and words don't make sense, no matter how hard you try.

We understand the unfair burden illiteracy places on innocent children, and we are committed to helping struggling readers across the country. You can help us to end our nation's literacy crisis.

Consider the impact of your gift:
  • By helping a child learn to read, you give them the tools to learn, explore and navigate life.
  • By helping a school district, you can vastly improve community, ensuring that more children graduate from high school and go on to higher education or find meaningful work and contribute to society.
  • By supporting HILL's infrastructure, you can help turn around our nation's schools. Young students of today will be our future engineers, teachers, scientists, writers, health professionals and diplomats.

Ways to Give

Cash gifts — the simplest and easiest gifts you can make — can be made through credit/debit card transactions, outright cash, or personal checks, cashier's checks, or money orders made payable to: Hanson Initiative for Language & Literacy.

Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks, and bonds provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to HILL before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, you may find that your gift will provide a twofold tax benefit, creating an income-tax deduction as well as helping avoid the capital-gains tax that would have been due on their sale. If you wish to transfer stocks please contact Shirley Carr at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 617-726-7728.

Matching-Gift Programs
— an easy way to double or even triple your donation to HILL is to find out if your company has a matching-gift program. Such programs typically match all or a percentage of employee contributions to charitable organizations, making the employer a partner in employees' personal philanthropy. Simply obtain a matching-gift form from your employer's human resource office or company website, fill it out, and provide it to HILL with your contribution.

Planned Gifts — to learn about deferred or planned gifts, including bequests, life-income plans, and other options for your estate — and for information about increasing your income, earning valuable income-tax deductions, and reducing your estate taxes - please call Shirley Carr at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Gift Pledges — HILL welcomes your gift through a pledge — a formal statement of intention to make a gift to the HILL. With a pledge, you may complete your gift by making regular payments over time, allowing you to give more generously than you originally may have considered. What is more, each payment on your pledge is eligible for an income-tax charitable deduction.

Illiteracy has reached crisis levels in the U.S. Did you know that:

  • 40% of American 4th graders cannot read at benchmark (NAEP, 2006)
  • U.S. is outpaced in math and science, which are impacted by literacy
  • Inability to read well is associated with dropping out of school, delinquency, inadequate health care, unwanted pregnancy, and chronic underemployment
  • The NICHD characterizes reading difficulty as a major public health concern

“About 20% of elementary students nationwide have significant problems learning to read; at least another 20% do not read fluently enough to enjoy or engage in independent reading.”
